It's that time of the year again - time to move back inside to ride! That means we'll be starting at the YMCA in Butler this weekend! (Saturday, November 19th). We'll be there every week on Saturdays from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.
You don't need to be a member of the YMCA to participate, but you will have to fill in a simple form for them. Bring a helmet and unicycle if you have them. And if you don't have them, not a problem - we do!
These Saturday sessions are great for learning, practicing new tricks, playing uni basketball with others and socializing with other riders.
And if you can't make it to the Y, we can be found at the Wheel Mill (Pittsburgh's Indoor Mountain Bike Park) on Friday nights too. Don't let the idea of riding in a Mt. Bike park hold you back - there are plenty of beginner friendly areas.

Where Did Summer Go?!
We've still been attending events and riding in spite of the lack of content showing up here. It's been a lot of the usual- #UnicyclesAreAThing with THICK, Open Streets, NAUCC, and the occasional round of general shenanigans.
And now it's late September.
Time for the Month of Mud races series. This is the premier series with a unicycle class, cash prizes each race, and swag at the final party for the overall top 3.
We warmed up for it last weekend with an awesome event- The Race to The Moon. That's where Mike Briggs took another bunch of excellent photos- some of which we're using here.
If the Month of Mud sounds like your thing, check out www.monthofmud.org or find the races on bikereg.com. Yeah, we hang with our biking friends. It makes for better events. We all win.

We've still been riding. Have you?
Friday nights have been beginner/hang out sessions at Riverfront Park with Thick Bikes from 6:30-8:30pm (weather permitting).
Friday nights have been beginner/hang out sessions at Riverfront Park with Thick Bikes from 6:30-8:30pm (weather permitting).
We also are part of Open Streets PGH. The May date has come and gone, but you can join us on June 26th from 9am to 1pm. We're moving a couple of doors down the street this time from our usual location. Bar Marco has been a big supporter of Open Streets and has graciously provided us with their nice flat parking lot for try a uni demos!
We're also doing some muni too. Several of us raced the 6 Hours of Brady's Run at the beginning of May as solo unis. We're going to be racing the Fat Tire Challenge in Sigel on June 18th as well.
We've had several people over the past few weeks tell us that learning to unicycle is on their bucket list. We can help you scratch that one off. Join us!

Wood Fest Recap and the (R)Ides of March
First up- New News:
Lumber Cross, the indoor cyclocross race at The Wheel Mill will have a unicycle division. We will be racing a bit later in the evening. The uni race will be sometime after 7pm. http://www.thewheelmill.com/lumber-cross-2016/
That means our Y session most likely will only be from 4:30-5:30 on the 5th so we can head to Pittsburgh to catch some of the bike racing fun as well.
The next weekend, March 12, the YMCA will be having an evening event requiring both gyms so we will not be meeting to ride indoors.
Now- The Wood Fest Recap:
To say this was an AMAZING event would be an understatement. The contests were a blast for both the bikes and unis (sometimes both at the same time), the uni demos were a success, and the hanging out was off the hook- and went well into the next morning. Since this was year 2 with camping, it's looking like it's an annual event. If you ride unis or bikes or both, you should plan on making the trip next year.
Jesse was the ONLY rider, bike or uni, to clear the skinny in the first contest of the day.
The next competition was a the game of Uni (or MTB or Bike as it is sometimes known). It involved a rider marking a line, and then riding it. If they did and another rider didn't, the rider not clearing the line got a letter. The line setter rotated through those in the group. Once a rider got Uni (or MTB), they were out. This continued until there was only one rider left. We unfortunately didn't get any uni pics of this event, but here's one of the bikes:
(Don sometimes does ride a uni, so it works.)
While unis of all wheel sizes from 12"-36" were available throughout the day, courtesy of THICK Bikes, we had specifically set aside 3pm as the learn to ride session.
Fun for kids-
And bigger kids.
Suz and Jen came specifically for the uni demos! They ended up riding for well past the scheduled hour and look forward to adding unicycling to their pedaling experience.
Next up (4pm) was the Footdown contest:
Daniel ended up winning the next 2 bike/uni mixed rounds.
After that was over, it was on to the Swap Meet and a chance to hang out for a while.
The final (official) contest of the night was the Cross Country Time Trial. If you've ever seen video of spectators at the Tour de France lining the streets and making a ruckus, you know what this looks like. Except this was indoors, and possibly louder and even more concentrated fun.
Then some of us tried to sleep, while others fought it off until at least 3:30am.
Either way, the coffee and pastries Harry picked up from Zeke's for the overnighters were quite welcomed the next morning.
Last year's Wood Fest was fantastic. This year it was even better. We can't predict how the next one will go, but we can assure you we'll be in attendance. We hope you will be too.
(Thanks to Sarah for the pics (3 and 4) and the videos. Thanks to the Wheel Mill for pics 1,2, and 5.)

Wood Fest 2016
Join us at The Wheel Mill for Wood Fest. The late breaking details are: There will be Uni Demos from THICK Bikes (they're a Unicycle.com dealer), a learner session, and Uni Categories in the contests throughout the day. As of now that will entail a Skinny Contest, a XC Loop Time Trial, and a Foot Down. We may even have another contest or two as well.
We'll also be camping out.
We went to the inaugural Wood Fest last winter, and it was the BEST DAY EVER (at least for the middle of winter)!
For more details (and to snag a camping spot), follow the link: http://www.thewheelmill.com/wood-fest-2016/
Join the fun of one!
